Description
Saint Agafya (Agatha) was the wife of Grand Duke Yuri II of Vladimir (1188-1238), and Theodora was their eight-year-old daughter.
Grand Duke Yuri's rule saw the Mongols invade the lands of Kievan Rus. In the course of many battles, they gradually took over his territory. On Sunday, February 8, 1238, the Mongols invaded his capital city of Vladimir and burned down two-thirds of the city. Grand Duchess Agafya, Princess Theodora, and many other members of their family were killed when the Dormition Cathedral, where they were taking refuge, collapsed in the fire. The Grand Duke died in battle a month later, on March 4.
Their feast is celebrated on February 4. In 1982, Russian Patriarch Pimen established a common celebration of the Saints of Vladimir on June 23, in which Saints Agafya and Theodora are numbered among the "Right-Believing Princesses."
In the icon, Saint Agafya holds a scroll that contains the last of the Lord's Beatitudes, "Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven" (Matthew 5:12).
