Description

This unique icon of the Presentation of Christ is from the 10th century Bamberg Psalter. It is a glorious depiction from St. Luke's Gospel (2:22-40) where the Theotokos and St. Joseph the Betrothed present the 40-day old Christ in the temple in fulfillment of Mosaic Law. There, as depicted in the icon, they are greeted by St. Simeon who utters his famous nunc dimittis, "now I may depart in peace...," upon meeting the Messiah.
 
It features Western iconographic forms and colors heavily influenced by Orthodox canons of iconography. As part of an ancient illuminated manuscript, it was painted around the time of the Great Schism (1054) between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. It represents the continuity that Western iconography--and religious art in general--at that time still preserved from its Orthodox roots.
