Description
This contemporary Byzantine icon depicts the Archangel Gabriel in shining white and red. He bears a scepter, denoting the authority delegated to him by the Lord of Hosts. As a member of one of the nine celestial hierarchies accounted by Scripture and Tradition, he serves as a mediator between God and man. In this icon, he is depicted in his role as messenger in which he served in announcing the Incarnation to the Theotokos/Virgin Mary and ultimately, the world. Painted by the renowned iconographer Athanasius Clark, it is a part of the Legacy Icons Clark collection.
An angel is a messenger of God, and a being which has stood before God and praised Him from a time before human comprehension. We cannot fully grasp what an angel's exact nature is, but we can understand an angel's function on earth. In icons, angels—especially the high-ranking Archangels—are depicted in an earthly form. All the angels are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.

Wonderful as a set
I purchased this icon along with the other Clark icons which go with this specific set. I have them all displayed on my icon wall, and with the uniform art and form, they add a special detail and balance which I was looking for in my own little church at home. I highly recommend this set.
