Description
This unique historical icon of the Annunciation is from the 10th century Bamberg Psalter. The Archangel Gabriel was sent from God to greet the Virgin, saying, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women!" He told her that she would bear a Son and name Him Jesus, and that He would be the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world. In humility, Mary accepted this news, saying, "I am the handmaid of the Lord."
It features Western iconographic forms and colors heavily influenced by Orthodox canons of iconography. As part of an ancient illuminated manuscript, it was painted around the time of the Great Schism (1054) between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. It represents the continuity that Western iconography--and religious art in general--at that time still preserved from its Orthodox roots.
