Description

After the miraculous conception of Saint John the Baptist by Saint Elizabeth and the Annunciation to the Theotokos of the conception of the Lord Jesus, the two cousins met at Elizabeth's home. When the Theotokos entered Elizabeth's presence, John leapt in his mother's womb with joy to be near the Savior and His Mother.

This important event is commemorated with a feast-day on March 30 in the Orthodox Church, and on July 2 and May 31 in Western Christianity. In our modern times, when human life is devalued especially among the unborn, we as Christians proclaim the truth that the unborn Saint John recognized the unborn Christ, and rejoiced in it. For this reason, the Lord is depicted as blessing Saint John in the womb—for, even as an unborn babe not yet fully formed, the Lord was one of the Holy Trinity: fully God and fully man.

The original of this icon was painted by Roman and Anna, a husband and wife iconography team in Moscow, Russia. Commissioned by Legacy Icons, we offer reproductions with the permission of the iconographers.

    Thnks, Legacy Icons!

Posted by A Polish Catholic on May 12th 2020

Since the outset of the recent pandemic, our family has been expanding the number and size of the places in our home which are designated specifically for praying, so we've added a number of icons to our corner. It made perfect sense, then, to give this specific icon to my wife as a birthday gift, especially because we've always felt a connection to Sts. Elizabeth, Zachariah, and John the Baptist and because my wife is very passionately pro-life. Legacy Icons has always been quick to ship things out to us, even when much of the economy is shut down or at least slowed, and I have always found that their icons are very good.

    LOVE!

I absolutely love this icon. When Legacy first announced this icon becoming available, I fell in love with it's simplistic beauty and when it arrived, it took my breath away. My only complaint is that I have to order another one, because my 4 year old insisted he needed it in his room. Would make a great gift, too.

    LOVE. IT.

This item is perfect in every way. I bought it as a gift for my wife to commemorate the end of her time in seminary. The story of the Visitation was the touchpoint for her sense of calling and will serve as a devotional reminder for her year of internship and a lifetime of faithful ministry to follow!

What an unexpected joy receiving this icon, The expecting Theotokos with her expecting cousin Elizabeth... St. John leaping with excitement at the closeness of Christ.
