Saint Sisoes lived in the fourth century, and he was a contemporary of Saint Anthony the Great.
When Saint Anthony died, Sisoes went to live in his cave. His ascetic labor carried him to the heights of spiritual purity, and he was given the gift of wonderworking, even bringing a child back to life. While he was strict with himself, he was merciful to others, and received all with love.
At the end of his life, Abba Sisoes lay on his deathbed, and the monks saw how he seemed to be pleading with someone. They asked what he saw, and he said, "The angels have come for my soul, and I am begging for more time to repent." The monks said, "You have no need to repent, Father." And the saint famously replied, "I do not think that I have even begun to repent." He then fell asleep, and his face shone as bright as the sun as his soul departed to heaven.
He is commemorated on July 6.
