Saint Hannah was the wife of Elkanah. She was deeply grieved by her barrenness, and she devoted herself to prayer in the temple. Once, as she was fervently praying in silence, the priest Eli thought she was drunk and rebuked her. But she poured out her sadness to him. Eli blessed her and sent her home. She conceived and gave birth to Samuel, whom she dedicated to the temple.
Hannah's song of thanksgiving is read daily at Matins in the Orthodox Church among the Nine Odes. The full story of her life can be read in I Kings/I Samuel chapters 1-2. She is commemorated on December 9.
