Description

This beautiful icon depicts the Theotokos as the Burning Bush of Moses, who is seen removing his sandals as the account in Exodus describes.

In the words of the Akathist Canon, " The great mystery of your childbirth did Moses perceive within the burning bush." As the bush burned with the fire of God's presence without being consumed, so too did the Theotokos carry the fire of the Godhead, in the person of Christ, in her womb without being consumed.

This icon was painted by Athanasius Clark.

    A challenge to explain

Posted by Unknown on Jun 9th 2016

One person who saw this icon said it looked like the Theotokos was appearing on a Christmas tree and was confused by that. To appreciate the icon demands one make an effort to study and fathom its rich and beautiful mystical meanings, which are neither obvious nor easy to articulate.
