This beautiful, handmade epitaphios (plashchanitsa) depicts the body of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.
In the ancient tradition of the Church of Jerusalem, the epitaphios is carried in solemn procession on the feast of the Dormition (August 15), in a service modeled after the Lamentations of Holy Saturday. This tradition has spread throughout the world, and it is a beloved element of the Dormition feast.
The icon is printed on the same canvas as our Masterpiece icons, and coated with a protective sealant. It is sewed to a navy velvet backing trimmed with a gold fringe. Embroidered appliqués are hand-stiched to the corners to complete the epitaphios.
Please allow 2-3 weeks for production. We highly recommend storing the epitaphios rolled, not folded, as creases may damage the print.
