Description

Saint Augustine lived in the 4th century. He was raised by his mother, Saint Monica, in Carthage, Africa. He lived a prodigal life of sin, and at the ceaseless prayers of his mother, he came to repentance and true faith in Christ. Augustine's autobiography of repentance is found in his book Confessions.

He traveled to Italy and studied under Saint Ambrose, was baptized, and was tonsured a monk. He was ordained a priest in 391 and became bishop of Hippo a few years later. As bishop, he combatted many heresies and wrote prolifically, using language that the common people could understand and learn from.

Saint Augustine reposed in peace in the year 430. His feast is celebrated on August 28 (the date of his death) in the West and on June 15 in the Orthodox Church. He is oftentimes given the additional honorific title of "Blessed."

    Beautiful Craftsmanship

Posted by Christine on Jul 14th 2017

I am very pleased with the icon of St. Augustine. The quality materials, rich colors and careful attention in mounting the print to the wood panel resulted in a beautifully crafted icon in the classic tradition.

    Well made

Posted by Unknown on Feb 27th 2017

This icon of St. Augustine is excellent, but I feel like the "faux grim/aging" on the upper left, upper right, and lower right is perhaps a little too conspicuous. One can notice it in the preview image on the site, but in person it looks more pronounced that in the picture. I suppose here it will remain up to the taste of each person. Otherwise, everything about it is beautiful, and it is very well made. Legacy Icons note: We never artificially age our icons; the reviewer mistakes the texture of the gold leaf background as faux aging.
