Samuel's prophecies were a driving force in the time after Israel settled. Born of the barren woman Hannah, Samuel was dedicated to God from his birth. When Israel demanded a king, Samuel anointed Saul, whom God had chosen. Throughout his reign, Samuel served as King Saul's advisor and his mediator with God, but Saul often rejected his advice. Samuel also anointed Saul's successor, the great King David.
The Prophet Samuel is commemorated on August 20.
