This 15th-century Greek icon depicts the Nativity of Christ, with several scenes from the event. The Virgin Mary is shown resting beside her newborn Son. The image of the cave recalls the icon of the Resurrection, reminding us that our salvation came through Christ's whole life, not just one part of it. The ox and donkey represent the worship of the entire human race, both Jew and Gentile. The Magi and shepherds are on either side, and the elder Joseph is shown being tempted to leave his betrothed. Filling the heavens are the Angels, praising God and proclaiming the good news of great joy to all the world.
