After the deaths of the 20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia, Bishop Anthimus fled to care for his remaining flock. When the soldiers found him, he pretended to be someone else and treated the soldiers kindly, offering them food and lodging. He revealed himself to them, and stunned at his kindness, they refused to arrest him. But he willingly followed them to the emperor, and along the way they converted to Christ. He confessed Christ before Maximian and was beheaded about the year 303. His feast is celebrated on September 3.
