Each of the four Evangelists is associated with a symbol, and Saint Matthew's is an Angel. Matthew, son of Alphaeus, was from Galilee. As a tax collector, he was literate in both Aramaic and Greek. After he was called by the Lord, Matthew invited Him to his home for a feast. On seeing this, the Scribes and Pharisees criticized Jesus for eating with sinners. To this, Jesus answered, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
